ILIUM

Biomimetic Monoblock Washbasin Pedestal

Project overview

ILIUM is a biomimetic washbasin pedestal inspired by the load-bearing and force-distributing principles of the human pelvis. Rather than directly copying the organic arches and hollow structure of the pelvis, it translates them into a fluid structure that supports a washbasin. The prototype consists of a single-piece rPETG main body developed specifically for large-format FDM 3D printing. The openings reduce mass while highlighting the structural character of the design.

For the wall connection, separate ABS mounting parts are designed to fit into integrated slots within the main body; this ensures the connection system is concealed while maintaining the continuity of the main form. ILIUM is a prototype proposal that combines digital manufacturing, biomimetic form, and sculptural character as an alternative to traditional cabinetry or metal pedestal languages in wet spaces. The design is developed for unique and contemporary bathroom interiors

03 New Function: This structural language evolves into a monoblock bathroom element that carries a washbasin while simultaneously creating a sculptural presence in the space.

02 Abstraction: ILIUM does not copy the silhouette of the pelvis; instead, it transforms the principles of arching, branching, lightening through voids, and load transfer into a new supporting geometry.

01 Anatomical Starting Point: The pelvis is a natural system consisting of arches, voids, and converging load-bearing lines that distribute the load from the upper body in various directions.

  • Inspiration: The load transfer and arching principles of the pelvis.

  • Form: A fluid, hollow, and load-bearing monoblock structure.

  • Purpose: To transform a washbasin pedestal into a spatial design object.

Design Story & Inspiration

Form & Structure

  • Load Distribution: Organic branches distribute weight evenly across the body, avoiding stress points.

  • Functional Voids: Openings reduce overall mass while providing visual permeability.

  • Monoblock Design: A seamless, single-piece structure that integrates the washbasin and plumbing.

Material & Sustainability

  • rPETG Body: Crafted from recycled post-consumer PET waste, offering high impact resistance ideal for humid environments.

  • ABS Wall Mount: A separate, replaceable component engineered for a secure and precise wall connection.

  • Eco-Efficient: The porous geometry ensures maximum structural strength with minimal material, contributing to a circular economy.

Production & Mounting

  • Large-Format 3D Printing (FDM): Layer-by-layer, mold-free manufacturing allows for rapid design revisions and minimizes the need for support structures.

  • Concealed Connection: The ABS bracket fixes to the wall and slides seamlessly into the rPETG body’s embedded slot, keeping all hardware completely hidden.

  • Dimensions: 528 mm (W) x 510 mm (D) x 875 mm (H)
